Can the Pain of Arthritis be Eased with Diet Changes

and Medication?

This Article by Jean Maguire details many of the theoretical causes of rheumatoid Arthritis as it is now understood. Even with all the research available, the final answer is still on the horizon. Arthritis is a complicated disease with many manifestations.

Maybe the information below will help you with your journey if you have some form of this disease. Finding a good caregiver that you can trust is always important. Communicating with them about your symptoms, your pain intensity and the amount of relief you obtain from their care is essential.

“By Jean Maguire

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA), one of the many types of arthritis, is a chronic autoimmune disease that affects 2.1 million Americans.

What Causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?
“Arthritis doctors commonly believe an infection like a virus may trigger the onset of RA,” says Dr. Wilson. “Patients may have a genetic predisposition that is set off by an environmental trigger such as a bacterial or viral infection, but we haven’t figured out what those triggers are.”

Smoking is also a risk factor for RA.

Whatever the cause, RA is mainly characterized by inflammation of the joint lining (synovium). It can lead to long-term joint damage, resulting in chronic pain and disability. It can also harm organs, including the heart, lungs, kidneys and skin, as well as nerves and blood vessels.

Symptoms usually start in the joints of the fingers, wrists and feet, which become warm, swollen and painful to move. Usually, both sides of the body are affected equally. Those with RA often experience fatigue, loss of appetite and low-grade fever, along with stiffness in the morning that lasts one to several hours. Nodules may form under the skin, frequently over bony areas exposed to pressure, such as the elbows. Over time, joint deformities may occur.

How is Rheumatoid Arthritis Diagnosed?
In reaching a diagnosis of RA, a doctor will take a family history and do a thorough physical exam. X-rays, sonograms or MRIs can help confirm a diagnosis. Blood tests are used to detect rheumatoid factor and antinuclear antibodies (ANA), although not everyone who tests positive for rheumatoid factor actually has RA.

How is Rheumatoid Arthritis Treated?
“Even if it’s in your genes, you can still prevent damage from RA,” says Dr. White. “The biggest news is the use of what are known as biologic medications, or biologic response modifiers (BRMs).” These can put the disease into remission and alleviate the pain. The earlier they are started, the better. BRMs must be injected under the skin or infused and delivered into a vein.

NSAIDs and low doses of corticosteroids, such as prednisone, are also used to reduce inflammation, thereby relieving joint pain, stiffness and joint swelling. The disease-modifying drug methotrexate prevents cells in the synovium from dividing in an abnormal way. Palliative measures”rest, exercise and the application of warmth or cold to reduce pain”are also frequently used to treat RA. Physical and occupational therapy help improve strength and lessen the stress on joints.

Scientists are studying genes that play a role in RA, says Dr. White. This could lead to the development of a vaccine to prevent the disease.

Rheumatoid arthritis is treatable. And the earlier you get treatment, the greater your chance of slowing the disease’s progress. By following your doctor’s advice and taking good care of yourself, you can continue to enjoy a productive life”

Not discussed in this article is something very important. R.A. is sometimes very closely related to allergies in the way it operates. Because of this there is much discussion about dietary changes that seem to be beneficial for people with Rheumatoid Arthritis. .

Holistic medicine for treatment of arthritis is becoming more and more popular.

Arthritis is a disease which causes inflammation of the joints. If left untreated joint damage, joint limitations and deformities can occur.

People suffering from arthritis are searching for ways and means to totally cure them of their condition. Arthritis is the common term given to diseases of the joints. Arthritis is associated with pain and swelling, which can come and go due to certain at this time, unknown trigger factors. Arthritis is very common in middle-aged individuals because that’s the time in their life when their joints begin to succumb to the normal wear and tear of everyday use. There are a lot of medicines for arthritis these days and one of them is what’s called the Amazing Arthritis Medicine.

The amazing arthritis medicine that I’m talking about to readers is ironically is one which deletes any form of medication, drugs, or strict diet. It is one way of curing Arthritis through natural healing – a day to day healthy living – which makes a change from the norm in treating Arthritis.

Along with humans, canines also suffer from Arthritis. But arthritis medicine will not make their arthritis go away. There are no cures for arthritis at the present time and In severe cases, surgery can be an alternative.

There are many medications that will sometimes relieve the pain and swelling associated with arthritis. After your veterinarian has diagnosed your dog with canine arthritis it would be best to find out what medicines he thinks would be best for the type of arthritis you dog is suffering with. Some people have used canine arthritis treaments but it is not advised, which is why this reference to canine arthritis was included in the article.

Heat applied to the painful area gives immediate but temporary relief, however. as soon as the source of heat is removed the arthritis pain will begin to return.

Physical therapy is another method of pain relief. Chiropractors and massage clinics offer ways to give you temporary relief; however, for long term relief, you need to see your doctor. A doctor can check, first, to be sure it is truly arthritis pain, then prescribe medication for your individual arthritis pain.

Recently, studies have been done on an herbal extract known as Tripterygium Wilfordi Hook F (TWHF) that has proven beneficial in the treatment of severe Rheumatoid Arthritis. The reports claim that it is very comparable to prednisone, a common chemical medication used in the treatment of arthritis. As in the cases of other herbal treatments and alternative medicine solutions in general, there is some controversy over the use of herbal medicines in the treatment of arthritis. The major complaint seems to be over the lack of regulation during the preparation and uncertainty about the side effects of some of the herbal preparations, because of a lack of controlled studies.

If you are newly diagnosed with arthritis, nothing beats going to the library. The library is full of arthritis information. There you can read stories from and about other osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis patients and acquire information concerning the various alternative treatments and medications. You should also contact your local hospital to see what services they offer your community in the way of arthritis information and support.

The belief of the Chinese medicine is that disease occurs when obstructions impede the flow of energy to the organs. Chinese herbs are used to restore energy and function to your body since Chinese medicine is based on the belief that if your body’s energy is blocked you cannot be in a state of wellness. Some of those who practice holistic medicine believe that a vegetarian diet can help to reduce your arthritis symptoms.

Psychic Edgar Casey also suggested that arthritis was caused by blocked paths in the lymph system and these blockages caused the inflammation and pain. In his readings he gave various diet suggestions such as eating figs and other fruits with fiber to encourage the body to cleanse its self. More information is available at ARE (Association for Research and Enlightment in Virginia). There were suggestions for several appliances, baths and rubs all “prescribed” for the people that requested readings. Thomas Sugaru authored a book called “There is a River” which describes in detail many of the .suggestions for different treatments to cure Arthritis that Casey gave while in a trance.

The main focus of this article is to encourage you to do some research, talk to your friends, family and your physician. The more informed you are about this disease, the better decision you can make when deciding on a treatment.

One may ponder whether eating certain foods does cause a flare-up in people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or not. Rheumatoid arthritis diets may affect the symptoms in people in different ways depending on the foods the patient eats. There is however, no definitive evidence to suggest that a rheumatoid arthritis diet will have a particular effect on joint pain or inflammation though it is thought that oranges as well as certain fish oils may have a positive effect on the patient and help reduce inflammation in a person suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. There is need for more research on rheumatoid arthritis diet to establish whether food habits do have a positive influence in treating rheumatoid arthritis or not.

Maintain Healthy Weight And Eat A Balanced Diet

In case one perceives that certain foods increase the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis then there is nothing lost in eliminating those foods from the diet to see whether it helps or not. But it is not wise to exclude food groups or large number of foods without first consulting your doctor. Also, one should maintain a good and healthy weight and do so by having a balanced diet since excess weight would add to the stress on the weight-bearing joints thus causing more joint pain as well as stiffness and inflammation.

The rheumatoid arthritis diet should contain the correct amount of calories, protein as well as calcium. Supplements may also be useful as are fish oils, enzymes called bromelain and pancreatin as also antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E.

To effectively manage rheumatoid arthritis diet, it is important to change the type of fat in the diet and Omega3 fatty acids have an important role to play in the inflammatory pathway of the human body. They are often used in dietary management. Foods rich in Omega3 fatty acids include canola oil, salmon oil, soybean oil, soybeans, walnut oil, walnuts and avocado and avocado oil.

There are also certain foods that one should avoid that aggravate the rheumatoid arthritis and may cause flare-ups. These include alcohol, dairy, berries, tea, coffee, refined wheat, saturated fats, salts, processed foods, and fried and grilled foods. It is wise to restrict these foods and in case one is not sure whether the foods consumed are causing a flare-up or not, one should follow an eliminating diet whereby the suspect foods are restricted, If one is eliminated and no change is detected one may then add them back one at a time to identify which foods were the culprits behind the flare-up.

There is a plan called the Ultimate Arthritis Cure if you would like to see what it has to offer.

A review of Arthritis indicates that progress in the field of arthritis and nutrition is slow, but we fully expect to see more justification of these theories as medical science progresses.

Here is a brief look at the ongoing research of arthritis and nutrition. There has been a lot of research that identifies the relationship between arthritis and nutrition.

Arthritis means inflammation of a joint or joints. Arthritis is usually caused by what people eat and drink and is becoming very common in people of all ages and will probably affect 90% of people by the age of 60.

Arthritis is a poorly understood condition but some scientists believe that rheumatoid arthritis is the result of a micro-organism or other foreign substance in the body.

Arthritis is the general name for a group of more than 100 diseases and becomes more prevalent as we age.

Arthritis is one of the most common chronic conditions today, affecting as many as 100 million people worldwide.

Can the foods you eat cause or affect your arthritis? Diet is a major role player in the onset of arthritis. There are some scientific reasons to think that the foods you eat could affect certain kinds of arthritis.

Studies have shown that excessive weight and your diet are definitely factors in certain types of arthritis. Research has shown several connections between food, nutritional supplements (vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids) and certain forms of arthritis or related conditions, such as gout, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, and reactive arthritis.

Healthcare professionals strongly recommend that people with arthritis follow a diet based on variety, balance and moderation. The standard medical treatment for arthritis usually focuses on medications that reduce inflammation, which decreases pain and increases mobility.

Advancements have shown to be extremely effective in both preventing and managing many forms of arthritis by all natural nutritional supplements.

Nutrition and exercise are beneficial for rheumatoid arthritis sufferers in additional to medical therapy. A person has to eat and drink the necessary foods required for proper nutrition. It is almost impossible to get a daily balanced diet so the logical answer is to allocate a portion of your food budget to include a nutritional supplement product that supplies the recommended daily minimums.

It is best for overall health when that can be attained through improved nutrition instead of toxic drugs. However, a lack of evidence doesn’t rule out the power of good nutrition–researchers could find no explicit link between red meat and RA either. Emphasis on nutrition is a meaningful choice and can give you control over your arthritis. While conventional medicine often helps to ease the symptoms, nutritional supplements can also have powerful effect in assisting in keeping this debilitating condition in check.

It seems like we hear conflicting news about what we should and shouldn’t eat at every turn, but experts have pinpointed specific foods and supplements that can actually decrease the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis when combined with regular exercise.

Other supplements that have been in the news a lot lately – glucosamine and chondriton – help the body repair damaged tissue, slow down joint degeneration and improve joint function and mobility.

Give some of our suggestions a try: Exercise at least 3 times a week and watch your weight.

Eat plenty of vegetables, fruits and whole grains and adhere to a low saturated fat and low cholesterol diet.

Moderate your sugar intake, consider using natural sugar substitutes; if you drink alcoholic beverages, drink in moderation and avoid tobacco use.

Take recommended supplements with your doctor’s approval. This well known advise is still important, drink eight glasses of water per day and get 8 hours of sleep each night

In addition to making changes to your diet the use of certain nutritional supplements may also help to relieve arthritic symptoms. Liquid dietary supplements have several advantages over tablets and capsules. Liquid vitamins and mineral supplements have a greater absorption rate than any other form of supplementation. The effective use of nutritional supplements and natural diet saves money, pain and lives.

The first step is to insure that you get the basic nutrition through proper diet and along with exercise. Just as it is for people without arthritis, maintaining a balance in the foods you choose is important.

While exercise is important for overall health, for people with stiff joints and decreased mobility, it can really help offset the consequences of this condition.

Begin your exercise program and take it slow and easy. Too much exercise, especially jogging, or anything that is hard on the joints, is not helpful and can cause traumatic arthritis. However, some mild daily exercise such as walking is generally best and does not stress the joints as does any vigorous exercise. Even walking in water or a pool is good alternative as mobility is easier in the water.

Studies have shown a connection between foods, vitamin supplementation, and fish oil (omega 3 fatty acids) can only help certain types of arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Oily fish such as wild Alaskan salmon, walnuts, freshly ground flaxseed or a good omega-3 supplement may help reduce the inflammation and pain of arthritis.

Research also suggests that a diet rich in Omega 3 EPA may help reduce the pain of inflammation associated with some forms of joint pain. For example, Omega-3 fatty acids from plant foods such as flaxseed and oil, nuts and seeds, avocados, olive and canola oils (just to name a few) is renown for preventing and even reversing osteoarthritis. More information is available in the Arthritis Relief guide.

Exercise is needed and if you can work up to an hour a day, the benefits will far outweigh the consequences of being unfit, being disabled and sick and spending your savings for medical expenses!

Arthritis comes in several forms. The most active are rheumatoid arthritis which seems to be caused by the body attacking its own joints and Osteoarthritis a condition caused by wear where the bones and cartilage deteriorate and the bones rub together causing pain.

Arthritis damage is visible in x-rays, MRI and other imaging sources

Inflammation is present in both kinds of arthritis and because of the swelling and soreness is the source of most of the pain. Research continues into cures and remedies for both kinds of arthritis.

There are a few rules that will help you control the pain…try to use natural relief instead of medication and surgery. Ice is great to use to relive pain. Sometimes heat will work. It is a matter of try and see.

Keep your weight down, if already overweight and suffering from knee or hip arthritis, consider water exercise in the pool to keep your joints working as much as possible. I personally use the hot tub first, then the pool when my hip begins to hurt really bad. The hot and cold seems to relieve the pain better than pills. Try 5 minutes in the hot tub, 10 minutes in the pool and repeat several times always ending up in the pool to cool down.

Even if you hurt, it is important to keep moving. When you stay active it helps keep your joints open and working. Do as much as you can, when you can and after a few days you should be able to do more. If you stop moving it is like the ice age has moved into your joints and you get to the place where you can’t move.

Stretching helps, even seated in a chair or recliner. Take a few minutes each hour to extend legs, pointing toes and making circles and do the same with your arms and hands. This is a gentle form of exercise but it will help.

Do some research into the types of enzymes and herbs that are beneficial in reducing inflammation. Be careful in in using herbs as some people have allergic reactions to them, so start off slowly.

Most important, keep researching, reading and educating yourself about arthritis. What works for someone else may help you.

What role does Omega-3 play in health and how are Omega-3 and arthritis connected? How exactly does Omega-3 improve the symptoms of arthritis? Find out the expert answers to these important questions in this article.

More and more people are opting for omega-3 supplements for overcoming their arthritis problem. Studies indicate that omega-3 and arthritis therapy go hand in hand. A lot depends on what type of arthritis you are suffering from, as Omega-3 is not equally effectively in all types of arthritis.

Omega-3′s are very helpful in the most common types of arthritis. The reason for this is that in the majority of the cases of arthritis, inflammation is the major cause. A continuous inflammation creates stiff and painful joints, and increases the problems associated with arthritis.

People suffering from arthritis go through a lot of pain and a lack of movement due to rigid joints. This robs them from a lot of enjoyment and happiness in life. Who can live happily when they are continuously undergoing a lot of pain?

Fish oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and helps to overcome the inflammation of the joints, which is the prime cause of pain associated with arthritis.

However, the caveat is that Omega 3s have a limited role in pain reduction in severe cases of arthritis. High-quality omega-3 fish oil supplements may be very helpful, but they might not be able to alleviate all the pain if taken on a standalone basis. They can be very effective when taken as a supplement to prescription medications in severe cases of arthritis.

In simple cases of arthritis, Omega-3 intake in the form of fish oil supplements can give you a great feeling of relief from inflammation and pain.

Besides using omega-3 supplements for arthritis, you should also pay close attention to your diet and as far as possible remove such foods that help to create inflammation.
Some of the common foods responsible for inflammation are –

– Fast food
– Cereals such as white bread, pasta, white rice, etc.
– processed food
– Staple foods such as donuts, bagels, etc.
– Oily and fried foods

Small changes in your diet can give you a lot of relief from arthritis pain. An inclusion of eggs, nuts, juices, green leafy vegetables and fish as a part of healthy diet will help you greatly in arthritis relief and shall dramatically improve the quality of your life.

Arthritis is almost synonymous with pain. The person who has been affected by the disease will be able to tell how difficult it is living with it. There are many things that one can do to have a little respite, a little arthritis relief. Read on and identify which one of these choices is the best arthritis relief for you:

Water therapy – If you think this is regarding drinking water, you are mistaken. This arthritis relief involves an aerobic type of class but carried inside a pool, immersed in water. Since your weight is taken care of by the water, you will be able to do all of the movements required with ease and grace.

Pain killer/ anti-inflammatory medication – There will be times when the pain would be intolerable and nothing you do can diminish it. In that case, you will be required to make a bee line to the doctor and ask him for appropriate medication. Avoid as much as possible any type of steroids; other than that use the medicine that the doctor prescribed you as SOS arthritis relief whenever the pain becomes too bad.

Apply heat – the use of a heat compress has been an age old remedy for pain. Here too, the use of concentrated infra-red rays, hot water bottles, sauna baths or hot baths offers a good measure of relief for the pain felt. Though the arthritis relief gained through this process is temporary, you will find that heat simply takes away the pain as if by magic.

Life-long partnership with the doctor – whenever you require, you can go for the over-the counter medicines. However, ensure that you do not overdose yourself. When you are in doubt, visit your doctor and explain to him/her all the symptoms and problems that you are encountering. There are alternative medicines that even doctors agree to. Some doctors gladly prescribe the alternative medicine/ therapy, since it offers a little more than the modern medicine can offer – a longer arthritis relief.

Walking is one of the simplest, yet most effective methods to control the pain for arthritis relief. For those who do not have a proper place or scope for walking, you could use a tread mill inside the house for the same purpose.

Maybe arthritis does not have a cure, but for relief you definitely have plenty of choices. Choose the one that suits you the best, and take the doctor’s advice at regular intervals. You will definitely maintain your good health in spite of being affected by arthritis.
